Just last week, Netflix announced that it had cast Henry Cavill in its adaptation of The Witcher, a series of short stories and novels by Andrzej Sapkowski. In the TV drama, Cavill will be playing the monster hunter Geralt of Rivia, the protagonist of the genre series.
While there hasn’t been any official announcement on when Cavill’s next appearance as the Man of Steel will be, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Warner Bros. was seeking to sign the actor to do a long-rumored cameo appearance in Shazam! (due out April 4, 2019). That’s the next DC superhero blockbuster set to open after this year’s Aquaman (due December 21).
Negotiations had fallen through for the cameo, though the reason for that is unclear. It’s believed that Cavill’s The Witcher commitment may have stood in the way, though one has to wonder why the actor wouldn’t be available for what would likely be a simple one-day shoot.
THR reports that a studio insider cites that Warners may very well be looking to do a “reset” of the DC Universe, as the only film in the series thus far with critical acclaim is last Summer’s smash hit Wonder Woman (a sequel to that film, Wonder Woman 1984 hits next November). “There’s a recognition that some parts of the previous movies didn’t work,” the insider says. Another source says that a solo Superman movie may be at least several years off. “Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors,” said the studio source.
For its part, Warner Bros. released a statement just a couple of hours after the report surfaced “We have a great relationship and great respect for Henry Cavill that continues to remain unchanged. Additionally we have made no current decisions regarding any upcoming Superman films.”
While that’s not exactly saying Cavill will be back in The Caped Wonder’s role, one thing’s for sure: There seems to be near unanimous praise for the actor’s portrayal of the very first superhero. About an hour after the trade’s report surfaced, four of the top trends on Twitter revolved around Cavill’s apparent dismissal from the cape, with “Superman,” “Henry Cavill,” “DCEU” and “Man of Steel” all trending.
World’s Finest Geeks will keep readers up to date with any further developments that come in regarding this story, as we’re sure to hear more about the fate of the Superman role in the next few days.
