Oscars: Marvel Ignites Superhero History with Nominations for Best Picture and Best Animated Feature

Marvel Entertainment has a lot to celebrate this morning as Marvel Studios’ ‘Black Panther’ and Sony Pictures’ ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ receive Best Picture nods.

Stan Lee must be smiling down from heaven this morning.

The legendary co-creator of most all of Marvel’s greatest characters may have left us back in November, but his legacy will stand the test of time and there is no better example of that than this morning’s Academy Award Nominations.

Front and center are the nominations of Black Panther for Best Picture and of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse for Best Animated Feature. This is the first time that tried-and-true Superhero films have been nominated in both categories, let alone in the same year.

But there’s more good news, as Black Panther didn’t stop at the most desired nomination in the available Oscar categories.  This morning, when actors Kumail Nanjiani and Tracee Ellis Ross announced the complete list of nominees, the film went a few steps further for nominations in other sections of the nominees list.

Black Panther was also nominated for 6 other awards:

Best Costume Design

Best Production Design

Best Sound Editing

Best Sound Mixing

Music (Original Score)

Music (Original Song)

And likewise, Marvel didn’t stop there. Avengers: Infinity War was nominated for Best Visual Effects, an honor they should easily decimate with a single SNAP when the awards show transpires on February 24th.

Things are looking great for Marvel to receive many accolades at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony.  But I guess on some level, at least… it sucks to be Aquaman this morning.
